Participate in Memory Research

At the Preston Lab at The University of Texas at Austin, we study how memory and learning change throughout life—from early childhood through adulthood. Our research explores how the brain helps us remember, learn new things, and solve problems.

We're Actively Recruiting

We are actively recruiting participants in the following age groups:

MRI Studies: Ages 7-12, 13-15, 18-30
Computer-based studies: Ages 7-12

The Brainwave Project

We’ve recently launched the BrainWave project, a long term MRI study focusing on adolescents ages 13-15. This project involves 2-3 visits a year over a span of 3 years that will help us better understand how memory changes during this critical developmental period. Through your participation, you have the chance to contribute to science and watch how your own brain's story evolves.

About BrainWave

What Does Participation Look Like?

Depending on the study, your participation may include:

  • Playing memory and thinking games on a computer
  • Completing simple cognitive tasks
  • Participating in safe, non-invasive MRI scans while performing memory tasks
  • Engaging in multiple visits over time for long-term studies

Our sessions are designed to be fun, engaging, and safe. For those interested in our MRI studies, all MRI sessions are conducted by trained researchers who guide participants through every step of the process. We take care to ensure that each visit is a positive experience and many participants especially enjoy getting to see a picture of their own brain!

Why Join?

Our projects aim to deepen our understanding of how memory and learning develop across different stages of life.

  • Help scientists understand how the brain grows and changes
  • Get compensated for your time
  • For MRI participants: take home a picture of your brain!

What Do Families Receive?

We appreciate the time and effort of our participants! Families receive:

  • $10 per hour for participating in computer-based studies.
  • $25 per hour for participating in MRI-based studies.
  • A high-resolution picture of the participant’s brain to take home.
  • The opportunity to be part of an exciting long-term study that advances scientific knowledge.
