Understanding the Developing Brain

A long-term research study exploring how memory and learning change as we grow.

The Brainwave Project is a special initiative by the Preston Lab at The University of Texas at Austin, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Unlike a one-time study, Brainwave follows teens and families over multiple years, helping scientists understand how the brain develops and processes information over time.

Why Join BrainWave?

By participating, you and your child will:

  • Contribute to groundbreaking brain research.
  • Receive regular study updates with insights from our research.
  • Help scientists understand how memory and learning evolve.
  • Earn compensation for your time.

What to Expect

The Brainwave Project is designed to be engaging and family-friendly. Here’s how it works:

Multiple Visits Over Several Years

Participants will return for several study sessions over a 3-5 year period. This allows us to track brain development over time and see how learning and memory change.

Interactive & Engaging Activities

Depending on the study session, participants may play memory and learning games on a computer, Complete fun thinking tasks and Undergo safe and non-invasive MRI scans to see how their brain processes information.

A Personalized Experience

Families will receive a special welcome packet with details about the study, regular newsletters with updates, study findings, and fun brain facts, and the opportunity to stay involved and see how their contributions help science.

Is MRI Safe For My Child?

Yes! MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a completely safe and painless way to take detailed pictures of the brain. It does not use radiation like X-rays or CT scans.During an MRI scan, participants lie comfortably inside a machine while playing simple games. Our friendly research team ensures each child feels at ease and answers any questions families may have.

What Do Families Receive?

We appreciate the time and effort of our participants! Families receive:

  • $10 per hour for participating in computer-based studies.
  • $25 per hour for participating in MRI-based studies.
  • A high-resolution picture of the participant’s brain to take home.
  • The opportunity to be part of an exciting long-term study that advances scientific knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does each study visit take?

Each session typically lasts 1-4 hours. The number of visits depends on your level of participation.

Will my child be comfortable during the MRI?

Yes! Our team is trained to make sure every participant feels comfortable and safe. Children can visit the lab in advance to see the MRI machine before their session.

How often will we need to come back?

If you participate in Brainwave, you’ll have several visits over the course of 3 years. We’ll provide reminders and work with your schedule to make participation easy.
